COGIT™ Lab

COGIT Lab is the technology platform being developed to support the implementation, study, and refinement of the COGIT™ Framework. While the framework provides a structure for reasoning development, the platform helps translate that structure into tools that can be used within real learning environments.

By combining instructional supports, measurement tools, and research analytics, COGIT Lab aims to help educators and researchers better understand how reasoning develops and how learning systems can support cognitive growth.

Why a Platform is Needed

Many learning initiatives struggle because the systems used to implement them do not provide clear visibility into how students are thinking. Traditional assessments often capture outcomes but provide limited insight into the reasoning processes that produced those outcomes.

COGIT Lab is designed to help address this challenge by supporting tools that can capture and analyze patterns in reasoning. This makes it possible to study how learners approach complex problems and how instructional strategies influence cognitive development.

The COGIT Lab platform extends the COGIT™ Framework by supporting learning activities, capturing patterns in student reasoning, and generating analytics that help educators and researchers better understand cognitive development and instructional impact.

What COGIT Lab Does

The platform is designed to support several interconnected functions that help bridge the gap between instructional practice and research.

  • Support learning activities that embed reasoning tools within instruction
  • Provide structured prompts that encourage deeper thinking
  • Capture reasoning patterns during problem solving
  • Support research and analysis of cognitive development
  • Generate insights that can inform instructional improvement

Supporting Learning Systems

COGIT Lab is intended to support learning across multiple levels of a system. In classrooms, it can help teachers embed reasoning supports within learning tasks. For researchers, it can help generate data that improves our understanding of how reasoning develops. For schools and districts, it may provide insights that help align instruction, assessment, and improvement efforts.

By connecting classroom learning with research insights, the platform is designed to support continuous improvement within educational systems.

Research and Development

COGIT Lab is currently under development through an iterative research process that draws on design-based research methods. This approach allows the platform to evolve through cycles of implementation, analysis, and refinement within real learning environments.

These cycles help ensure that the platform remains grounded in both research and practical classroom experience.

COGIT Lab is being developed through an iterative research process that includes design, implementation, data collection, analysis, and refinement. Each cycle helps improve both the platform and the underlying COGIT™ Framework while generating insights about how reasoning develops in real learning environments.
